Just File It! Gives Free Access to Tax Preparation Services

January 14, 2011 will kick off the Just file it! program for the 2010 tax season. In past years, this program has helped thousands of Michigan residents file their taxes for free and take advantage of the state and federal earned-income tax credit (EITC). Last year 10,145 Michigan filers received more than $21 million in tax refunds and credits.
Michigan residents miss out on millions of dollars in tax refunds and credits every year, and Just file it! serves those who need these funds the most. The program is one of many initiatives non-profit credit unions have spearheaded to better serve their members.
The Just file it! program is available to anyone in need of tax services no matter what their income level. All that is required to use the Just file it! program is a computer, Internet access, a Web browser and a printer. The program uses a free, Web-based software program, posing questions to users and offering assistance via on-line chats. It is offered in English and Spanish. Just click on the Just File It! logo above or to the right to begin preparing your 2010 taxes.
Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, & Disclosure Act of 2009
As a result of the 2009 Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009, your open-end loan payment due date may have been changed. BCACFCU would have mailed you a notice if your loan(s) were affected. Existing automatic payments (ACH, Payroll, and Automatic Transfers) remain unchanged. Please contact at Member Service Representative at 269-968-8063 if you have any questions regarding this matter.

HEARTLAND PAYMENT SYSTEMS COMPUTER BREACH PUTS USERS OF VISA AND MASTERCARD AT RISK NATIONWIDE
A computer breach at Heartland Payment Systems has put a large number of credit card account numbers nationwide at risk, including members at BCACFCU using the Visa credit card and the Mastercard debit card. Heartland Payment Systems provides transaction data service for a number of restaurants and retailers.
The criminals gained access to data on Heartland's systems. BCACFCU's computers were not compromised and your personal and account information on file at BCACFCU remains safe.
If BCACFCU receives notice that your card number has been processed by Heartland Data system BCACFCU will send you a letter notifying you and informing you that BCACFCU will be issuing you a replacement card. Even though there may have not been any type of fraud with your card BCACFCU feels this is a pro-active measure to take.
To learn more about the breach you can Google "heartland data breach."

DEBIT/CREDIT CARD FRAUD BEING EXPERIENCED NATIONWIDE
Many financial institutions around the country are experiencing an increase in debit card and credit card fraud. A very small percentage of BCACFCU members have been victims of this very sophisticated fraud scheme. Law enforcement officials are working with card associations and card processors to determine the source of the fraud, also referred to as the "common point of purchase" (CPP). The fraud has impacted card issuers across the country both large and small.
Below are few questions that our members have asked.
1. Question: What's being done?
Answer: Card processors and card associations are trying to determine the “common point of purchase” (CPP) by cardholders but have been unsuccessful.
2. Question: Why does the common point of purchase (CPP) need to be determined?
Answer: The purpose of identifying the common point of purchase is to pinpoint where a legitimate cardholder may have used their card and their card information may have been captured. (NOTE: The CPP is not where the fraud is taking place.)
3. Question: What happens once the common point of purchase is determined?
Answer: Card Issuers are notified of the cardholder account numbers that were captured and can take action to prevent future fraud.
4. Question: What is BCACFCU doing to help prevent/reduce fraud?
Answer: Both debit card and credit cards are protected by a system that monitors fraud patterns. This system will "flag" an account that meets a certain fraud pattern. This flag will block future transactions.
5. Question: Is BCACFCU doing anything else?
Answer: Yes, most fraudulent transactions are occurring outside of Michigan. 99% of BCACFCU members are Michigan residents. BCACFCU is now requiring a pin be used on all debit card transactions that are transacted outside of Michigan that are $50.00 or greater. All international transactions require a pin.

One Small Step for You...One Giant Leap for Online Safety
Battle Creek Area Community Federal Credit Union wants to be sure that the level of authentication (i.e. the way you identify yourself and the security measures you employ) used in a particular transaction is appropriate to the level of risk in that application.
We're asking for a bit more information when you sign on to www.bcacfcu.org these days. Maybe your favorite color, you zodiac sign, your favorite television show, or the street you grew up on.
We're not nosy, just cautious. This small extra step confirms that it's really you accessing your accounts--not some impostor who knows just enough about you to be dangerous.
